Live it - Share it (Day 15)

So far over the last 2 weeks we should have studied our faith for at least 280 minutes. We should be getting more knowledgeable about our beliefs. I tell you though- none of that matters unless we live it!  Fulton Sheen once said, “It is easy to find truth; it is hard to face it, and harder still to follow it.” I would like to focus living our faith when no one is watching but God. Matthew 6:6 says, “But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” We see clearly that what we do in secret matters to God. What are some things that we do negatively in secret? What do we lose sleep over? What haven’t we been able to come to grips with? Is it alcohol? Medication? Pornography? Anger? Over worrying about worldly things? Yelling at your children? Gambling? Purchasing things without telling your wife? Over eating? What is your secret vice? What are you ashamed of? What is it for the life of you that you cant you stop doing? I know you’re probably starting to get defensive right about now. Don’t worry it's natural. You’re thinking, “What business is it of yours what I struggle with? I go to mass, I tithe, I volunteer, I pray. I’m not hurting anyone. Back off.” This analogy might help: As law abounding drivers, we have to follow certain laws that apply to driving. If we break these laws, we could injury other drivers. If we choose to run a red light, we could crash into another vehicle. But in addition to following laws we also have to get our cars inspected once a year. We can follow the law all day long but it is to no avail if our own personal cars are not worthy of the highway. This is why we have to examining our own conscience and get it inspected at least once a year in the confessional. Personally, I struggle with lust and looking at things which I’m not supposed to. Hey I’m not here talking about it because it’s an enjoyable subject- in fact it’s a quite touchy subject- no pun intended. I’m here as your brother telling you its ok to admit your vices. It’s the only way we are going to beat them. We will either accuse ourselves or excuse ourselves. God knows our situation; He will not judge us as if we had no difficulties to overcome. What matters is the sincerity and perseverance of our will to overcome them. Before we can be cured we must want to be cured. Those who really wish for help will get it. C.S. Lewis says, “I find a good many people have been bothered by Our Lord's words, "Be ye perfect." Some people seem to think this means "Unless you are perfect, I will not help you"; and as we cannot be perfect, then, if He meant that, our position is hopeless. But I do not think He did mean that. I think He meant "The only help I will give is help to become perfect. You may want something less: but I will give you nothing less."

Time after time I have stressed the importance of sharing the Gospel with our actions. In football terms: this is offensive. Evangelization is offensive. Apologetics is defensive. We are really familiar with the word Evangelization but sometimes the word apologetics slips under our radar. The standard scripture for apologetics is 1 Peter 3:15 “Always be prepared to make a defense to any one who calls you to account for the hope that is in you, yet do it with gentleness and reverence.” Are you prepared to make a defense of your faith? We will have a great opportunity to do just that on this 33 Day Purity Boot Camp. But remember it says do it with “gentleness.” We are Christ ambassadors, not his debate champions. It’s the Holy Spirit who converts souls.

I would like to leave you with a reading from Paul’s letter to the Colossians. Paul was writing a community who were seeking to learn their faith, live their faith, and share their faith. We to are a community who are seeking to learn our faith, live our faith, and share our faith. Let’s for a second pretend like Paul is writing to only us:

In Colossians 3:1-17 Paul tells us:

If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming.* In these you once walked, when you lived in them. But now put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and foul talk from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old nature with its practices and have put on the new nature, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. Here there cannot be Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free man, but Christ is all, and in all. Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassion, kindness, lowliness, meekness, and patience, forbearing one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as you teach and admonish one another in all wisdom, and as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Know Your Faith, Live Your Faith, Share Your Faith

How we Salute in the Militia (Day 13)

We do it before we eat. We do it as we walk into the sanctuary. We do it when we genuflect. We start Mass with it. We end Mass with it. We do it three consecutive times before we read the Gospel. We do it when we drive past a Catholic church. We do it before the game, before we go to sleep, and before we travel. In the west we do it with our right hand; in the East they do it with their left. Some do it with three fingers; some kiss it upon its completion. Martyrs did it as they were taken to their death. We are marked with it when we are baptized. You don’t have to be literate to do it because it requires no special knowledge or skill. It is our salute. In nómine Patris et Fílii et Spíritus Sancti. Amen. The sign of the cross. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

It is our most simplistic prayer but it conveys and sums up the entire mystery of our faith. It’s a simple prayer but it is SO crucial to beat our battle with lust. Paul speaks of the cross in almost all his New Testament letters: “But far be it from me to glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world” (Gal 6:14). The earliest accounts suggest that Christians traced the cross with their thumb upon their forehead. My patron saint, Saint Francis de Sales explains it this way:

“We raise the hand to the forehead, saying ‘In the name of the Father’ to signify that the Father is the first person of the Most Holy Trinity, of whom the Son is begotten and from whom the Holy Spirit proceeds. Then saying, ‘And the Son,’ the hand is lowered to the breast, to express that the Son proceeds from the Father, who sent him down to the womb of the Virgin. The hand is moved from the left shoulder to the right, while saying, ‘and of the Holy Spirit’, as the third person of the Holy Trinity, proceeds from the Father and the Son, that he is the love that unites both, and that, through his grace, partake of the fruits of the passion. Accordingly the Sign of the Cross is brief declaration of our faith in the Blessed Trinity, in the passion of Christ, and in the forgiveness of sin, by which we pass from the left side of curse to the right side of blessing.”

There is no way of talking about the sign of the cross without talking about the Most Holy Trinity. Most catechists dread talking about this subject, and most priests only preach about it on Trinity Sunday. Why? Because as Saint Augustine says, “If you understand it, it’s not God.” No matter which way I go about this topic I’m sure to be a --heretic.

Once I went to a conference where it's theme was, “God is Love.” I believe that statement is what makes us Christians. A Jew or a Muslim would say God loves. The radical Christian difference is we say God IS Love. And I think that is the best way to explain the Trinity. If you say God is Love, then you have to mean that within the very being of God there is a play between a Lover, the Beloved, and the Love that they share. If God is not a Trinity, God is not love. For love requires three things: a lover, a beloved, and a relationship between them. One being- three persons. In the creed we say “We believe in one God.” That is our Catholic way of saying what the Jews have said for years “Hear, O Israel: the Lord is our God alone.” God is one but we know through the revelation of Jesus Christ that God has to shown himself to be One being three persons. The sender the sent and the love in which the sent was sent. Still think the sign of the cross is simple?

So how does this apply to us today? We are called to be men who invoke the Trinity. You say “sure I make the sign of the cross all the time”. But I tell you today that we have to be MEN of the triune God. Jesus gave us the perfect example. He held nothing back from the Father. That’s how we should love each other. That’s the principle for the Sacrament of Marriage. In marriage the two become one. So much so, that nine months later you have to name that love that was shared between the two. That is one reason why that Catholic Church condemns contraception (I didn’t say doesn’t like. I said condemn. Also note that contraception is the fule the porn industry runs on- no birthcontrol, no porn). It’s an anti-trinity mentality (Pornography is an anti-trinity mentality- it is selfish). The contraceptive mentality says “I’m going to give most but not all” but the mentality of the Trinity says “Have this mind among yourselves which was in Christ Jesus, who though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but EMPTIED himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross (Philippians 2:4-7). Imagine for a moment if Jesus on the cross had a contraceptive mentality. What if he held back- just a little back up there on the cross? What if he just appeared to have died? (You know that’s an ancient heresy BTW) If Jesus had a contraceptive mentality there would be no salvation for you and me.

At the beginning of this post I named a lot of places that we invoked the Trinity. Some places I didn’t name were the bed room, computer room, office, and over a smart phone. And it’s a sad fact. Can you imagine what power would be released if we invoked God in the places where we fell often to lust? Can you imagine what power would be released into our marriages if we invoked God in the bedroom? You’re talking about a country that spends billions on pornographic material and millions on Viagra and other related medications. It’s food for thought-what if we prayed and called down the Trinity while we partook in the martial embrace – the very action that replicates the life of the Trinity? It’s no small thing we do when we make the Sign of the cross. It should take our breath away- but only so that we can be filled up with another breath: the spirit of God.

PRAY:

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The PORN Effect (Day 12)

Sometimes, the only way I can keep my head above water in my own fight for purity is to help other men. So yesterday I brought some copies of "Taking Down Goliath" to my local parish. I really recommend anything that Matt Fradd puts out but especially this CD because he allows for you to burn and give away as many copies as physically possible. And you'll want to because his stuff is good! You cannot go wrong —from his blog, to his website, to his several talks on DVD and CD—  all great material. To be honest his site the Porn Effect is what inspired me to start this blog. And now hopefully many men are fighting the "porn effect" with the "P.O.R.N. Effect". Here is some great advice from Matt Fradd:

Step 1: Admit That There's A Problem
I recently heard that married men live from 5 to 10 years longer than those who don't marry. Apparently the reason is that their wives force them to go see a doctor when something is wrong. It seems that we as men can be so stubborn that we would rather lose a decade of our life than admit that we might not have it all together. But this first step is vital and if you are not willing to admit that you are not in control and that your lust, your use of porn, your masturbation is a problem then unfortunately this site has no more use for you.

Step 2: Set Yourself A Goal
If you own pornography, whether it be in the form of magazines, videos or websites. Trash them immediately. Don't just trash them so you can go back to them in a moment of weakness. Burn them, delete them, set up a porn filter on your computer. I know of one man, when he found out the truth of what porn was doing to him he took all his Porn DVD's and a sledge hammer and destroyed what was slowly destroying him. Set a realistic goal that you know you can reach, for me it began with "I will not look at porn or masturbate for 1 week". Once I made it through the week, I set another goal for myself.

Step 3: Prayer
I would fail in my mission if I did not address the nessecity of prayer, and by prayer I mean, repentance, surrender, trust. These are all exceptionally hard things to do, we don't like to repent because we don't like being wrong. We don't like to surrender because we have been taught to have complete control over our lives. We don't like to trust because we have been let down constantly by those we love and by those who have manipulated us. I can only speak from my own experience. You will not find a magical prayer, or a nice little list of rules to follow to become pure. Purity is not the destination, it is a lifestyle, a daily battle. Heaven is the destination and purity will help us get there. Personally I have found a devotion to the daily Rosary to be an incredibly powerful tool. After each Rosary I hold it up and say "Mary I have taken up your chain (the rosary), now take off my chains of lust"....

Step 4: Fasting
If I cannot say no to that next chip, chocolate bar, slice of pizza, beer, (fill in the blank). How will I be able to say no to the porn pop up site. Fasting strengthens our wills and our hearts. An alcoholic that cannot say no to his next beer is not free, he is enslaved. We need to deny our appetites not because food and drink and television are bad but so that we will be master of these things and not allow these things to have mastery over  us. It's easy to say that we are not enslaved by TV, but try giving it up for a week and see if you don't feel the burn! I would encourage you to join www.e5men.org e5 men is an growing army of men who are sick of the lust and the lies they've believed and are now taking a day a month to fast for a woman in their life.

Step 5: Replacing The Habit
Fr Laurence Freeman OSB suggests that to defeat a bad habit, it's important to develop a good habit, in order to displace the bad one.  Sitting around the house continually focused on "not masturbating or looking at porn" will cause you to become inverted and scrupulous. Get up off your tail and get involved in some physical exercise, be it football, jogging, lifting weights, (I wouldn't recommend draughts). As Christians we are not called simply to avoid evil, we are called to do good! do something productive such as helping the poor, becoming a member of an apostolic group in the parish, joining a prayer group, forming a group of young newly wed couples to assist with marriage preparation in a parish, becoming a regular visitor to refugees, homeless, mentally ill people, etc.

Step 6: The Importance Of A Accountability Partner & Confessor
Sorry if I am the first one to break this to you but you cannot do this alone. Check out this accountability software that shows your friends EXACTLY what you've been viewing. You are going to need solid brothers to fight beside. Find a fellow man that you trust and share with each other your struggles, your falls & your victories. I cannot stress enough how important the sacrament of confession is. If you are a Catholic and you fall into sin through porn or masturbation it is vital for your healing that you seek a good and holy priest out that you can confess to. There is no sin that God cannot forgive. The only sin that God cannot forgive is the one that you will not ask forgiveness for. And don't priest hop, by this I mean go to a different priest each time so they're unaware of how often you fall. The Priest is not there to judge you, and he has heard it all before. Again this is not something I have discovered from a nice little Catholic book. I have experienced time and again that the Sacrament of confession not only frees us from our sin but it also brings healing.

Step 7: Know Your Battle Field
You know  where you are likely to fall into lust. For me it was late at night on the computer when everyone else was in bed. You must know you're battle field and act accordingly. Jesus said "If your eye causes you to sin, tear it out" What is Jesus saying? He's warning us not to pussy foot around with sin. Allow me to give you a modern day translation "If your computer causes you to sin, get rid of it!, if your Television causes you to sin, throw it away!" And yes it is that serious.

Step 8: Mastery Over The Eyes
Basically the eyes are the gate way to the soul and what you choose to let in will affect you for better or for worse. Let me give you an analogy: Imagine the temptation to lust as a sumo wrestler. If you get into the ring with him he is going to knock you flat on your back. So what do you do? You starve the sumo! You starve the eyes. This means making the choice to look away from the porn rack in the petrol station, not taking that second gawk and the cashier's cleavage as she bends over. Our minds are like sponges, and if you dip it into a cesspool of filth, or The pure (living) water of Christ it will affect how you reason and act.

Step 9: Do Not Become Scrupulous
An easy trap to fall into when breaking free from porn is to become scrupulous, constantly examining yourself to see if you sinned or not. I remember one teenage guy telling me recently that he just saw a beautiful woman, and he wondered if he was lusting or not. Let's get this straight. If you are a man and you are not attracted to a good looking woman, please don't make the mistake of thinking that you are pure! There is something wrong with you! Women are beautiful! Recognizing this is not lusting, it is in fact giving glory to her Creator. But after seeing this woman do you think about all of the things you could do to her sexually? There's a big difference.

Step 10: Do Not Despair
One thing I have come to understand is that Jesus Christ did not come to earth and die on a cross to kick us while we are down. He does not come to condemn but to raise up and save. The Lord humbles, the Devil humiliates. The Lord corrects, the Devil accuses. You are not the enemy of God, you are his beloved son (daughter) in whom he is well pleased, he sees all of you, even the parts your ashamed of and he loves you. This love is a cleansing love, it burns, breaks and liberates. God is more eager to rescue you from this sin than a mother, her child from a burning house. Healing is possible. Healing is possible. While we will never be free from temptation in this life please don't fall into the trap of thinking that all men masturbate and look at pornography. They don't. I don't. God delights in you. As a father is not satisfied with his son addicted to alcohol, God is not satisfied with your sin.

33 Day Purity Boot Camp

33 Day Purity Boot Camp
In preparation for Total Marian Consecration

My Dear Brethren,

I have felt compelled to write to you about this topic.  The word “compelled” actually would be an understatement because this “33 Day Purity Boot Camp” has not left my head since its conception. I started formulating this “battle plan” a year ago when I decided to get serious about my own personal war with lust.
I write you this not only for my sake, but for your sake. As Paul says in his 2nd letter to the Corinthians, “For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.” I would like to invite you on a 33 day exploration into the LORD’S grace. For 33 days I would like to journey together, as pilgrims to experience life in a richer way. In John 10:10 Jesus teaches, “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” How does He give us this life? One word: grace! Question 456 in The Baltimore Catechism asks, “What do you mean by grace?” It then answers, “By grace I mean a supernatural gift of God bestowed on us, through the merits of Jesus Christ, for our salvation.” Grace is the only thing that will free us from our addiction to pornography.  I would like to share with you ways to invite grace, life, and true happiness into your life. I thought of the 33 Day Purity Boot Camp while I was reflecting on the various writings of the saints and doctors of the church, but these are in no way my own ideas. If you were to take all 2000 years of the Church’s advice and compare it, you’ll be very amazed to notice how similar it is. Why? Because good theology is always plagiarism; there can never be “new” truth, only new ways of understanding that truth. If someone comes up to you and says, “I’ve had a revelation of new truth.” Run! I have no new truths to share with you but perhaps a new way of seeing it in your life.

We have been called to be soldiers for Christ (2Tim 2:4). We have been called to be pure (Eph 5:5). We fight three major enemies: the devil, the world, the flesh. Every good soldier knows and understands his enemies. He gains this knowledge from going to boot camp. So too, if we wish to be soldiers for Christ, we must undergo a boot camp, so to speak. We must learn how to effectively defeat out three enemies:

The Devil:
He tempts us with thoughts of self-gratification, lustful images in our minds, and past failures. There is no debating with him. If you encounter him -run. He’s an angelic being; he is way smarter than you’ll ever be. Never debate or play with temptation. Shut the door as soon as you feel it coming near. It wins every time. Run. “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” 1 Peter 5:8.

The World:
Meaning the secular world. It feeds you lies. Lies about purity, lies about freedom, and lies about what’s morally acceptable. We are in a culture war and you’re being blasted at 24/7. If you want to beat your battle with lust, you must learn to become counter-cultural. This will mean some sacrifice, but it will also mean freedom. “You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God?” James 4:4.

The Flesh:
Because of our fallen natures we have a tendency to choose sin. You’re reading this because you most likely have an issue with lust. Lust is an inordinate love of the pleasure of the flesh. Your issue with lust didn’t conquer you over night and it will not surrender over night. New habits must be learned. Right now you’re a slave to your appetites but this process is about making your appetites a slave to your will. “For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit, are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other…” Gal 5:17.

“The world, the devil, and the flesh are a band of adventurers who take advantage of the weakness of that savage you have within you. In exchange for the poor bauble of pleasure, which is worth nothing, they want you to hand over to them the pure gold and the pearls, the diamonds and the rubies, drenched in the living redeeming blood of your God- the price and the treasure of your eternity.” Saint  Josemaria Escriva.

Here are five ways the saints throughout the ages have recommend beating our three enemies.

1.   Prayer
2.   Fasting
3.   Study
4.   Mortification (Exercise)
5.   Acts of Charity

I can promise you, that if we apply those 5 things daily for 33 days, we will see our lives totally transformed! Just as boot camp doesn’t automatically make a good soldier, boot camp is in no way a cure for lust or pornography. No, that comes from lots of experience on the battle field. Boot camp is the starting point. No boot camp… no solider. We must learn to crawl before we walk.  This 33 Day Purity Boot Camp is meant to lay a foundation of good habits. Habits, that in time, will become virtues. Virtues are the opposite of vice. It’s been said that it takes three weeks to build a new habit. Saint Louis De Montfort recommend a 33 day preparation, thus the inspiration for our training.  Right now we have many vices to beat. Therefore, for 33 days, “gird up your minds, be sober, set your hope fully upon the grace that is coming to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ” 1 Peter 1:13.

Prayer

“If you’re not a man of prayer, I don’t believe in the sincerity of  your intentions when you say that you work for Christ.” - St. Josemaria Escriva

“By often turning your eyes on Him in meditation, your whole soul will be filled with him.” St. Francis De Sales

For 33 days commit 20 minutes daily to your prayer life. Prayer is like exercise; at first it will seem unnatural and even painful. But the more you do it, the more you will enjoy it and the more you will see where it is beneficial for your life. Only you know the state of your prayer life. Pick one thing to focus on for 33 days. If your prayer life is non-existent, start small. If you are a daily prayer warrior, add something substantial. Peter Kreeft, one of my favorite modern Christian writers said this, “I strongly suspect that if we saw all the difference even the tiniest of our prayers to God make, and all the people those little prayers were destined to affect, and all the consequences of those effects down through the centuries, we would be so paralyzed with awe at the power of prayer that we would be unable to get up off our knees for the rest of our lives.” No relationship will thrive without communication. Prayer is how we communicate with our Father. There are many types of prayer: intercessory, thanks giving, contemplative, and adoration. Spend 33 days on your knees.

Some ideas: Here at P.O.R.N. Militia we recommend the most Holy Rosary.

·    Daily morning, noon and night prayers.
·    Novenas
·    Chaplet of Divine Mercy
·    Pray the Psalms daily
·    Liturgy of the Hours
·    Daily Mass
·    Eucharistic adoration.
·    Mediation of the Stations of the Cross
·    Prayer journals
·    Use a prayer book

Fasting

Fasting is the support of our soul: it gives us wings to ascend on high, and to enjoy the highest contemplation! God, like an indulgent father, offers us a cure by fasting.-Saint John Chrysostom

Ordinarily you eat more than you need. And the natural result, a heavy fullness and discomfort, benumbs your mind and renders you unfit to savor supernatural treasures. - St. Josemaria Escriva

Above we talked about prayer. You have to say “no” to something, in order to make time to pray. You have to say “no” to anything, in order to do anything else! That is the premise of fasting, saying “no” to something good to achieve something great. By fasting we become the masters of our physical desires instead of becoming slaves to them. Fasting is a biblical discipline that can be defended from both the Old and New Testaments. Christ expected his disciples to fast (Mt 9: 14-15) and gave them instructions for how they should do so (Mt 6: 16-18).  For 33 days, fast from something you consider good and enjoyable in your life in exchange for something better. Fasting is deciding to downshift, power-down, turn off, unplug, and walk away from any distractions that might stop you from being fully effective in your life. Set aside any thing that might stop you from being the best husband, worker, friend, and disciple. For 33 days “Be still” and fast daily. If you can’t tell yourself “no” to a piece of pizza how are you going to be able to tell yourself “no” when you are sexually tempted? For 33 days stop and smell the roses. Stop staring into a screen and start staring into your family. Logoff facebook and put your face in a real book. Pull out of the drive-thru line and cook something. Turn off the radio and say a prayer. Get off the couch and go walking. Actually use your iPhone to make a phone call. I’m not saying that any of those things are bad. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with television, the internet, fast-food, music, or even iPhones. But the misuse of those things is another subject all together. Our culture wants constant instant entertainment. Our culture fills itself with continuous noise and distraction. Our culture uses every means of wealth and technology to look for something- meaning. But ironically our culture refuses to stop and listen. Stop and listen to what God is telling you.

Some ideas: Here at P.O.R.N. Militia we recommend skipping a meal and staying away from all forms of secular media for the entire 33 days.
·    Your favorite foods for healthier foods
·    Television for a reading
·    Secular music for Christian music
·    Facebook and other “social” networks for real conversation
·    Watching sports for playing sports
·    Time for yourself for time for your family
·    Giving up fishing for fishing for men
·    Giving up shopping for giving to the poor

Study

Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.- St. Jerome

You pray, you mortify yourself, you labor at a thousand apostolic activities…but you don’t study. You are useless, then, unless you change your ways. Don’t tell me you’re good; you’re only “goodish”.-St. Josemaria Escriva

In our modern time of instant knowledge we have no excuse for not knowing out faith. “You will seek me and find me; when you seek me with all your heart” Jeremiah 29:13. Jesus puts it this way in Luke 11:9-10 “And I tell you, Ask, and it will be given you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For every one who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.” We do not have to go to any drastic measure to ask, seek, or knock - no it’s just a click away. We have every resource and every imaged type of media at the tip of our fingers and yet we are ignorant of our faith. Those scriptures told us God is pleased when we seek truth- not when we become experts. No one likes a “know-it-all.” God is pleased when we are seeking to learn our faith. C.S. Lewis says, “Christianity, if false, is of no importance, and if true, of infinite importance. The only thing it cannot be is moderately important.” If that is true, ask yourselves, “Why do I have sports statistics memorized but I can’t explain the Church’s teaching on the sacrament of reconciliation? Why am I an expert on hunting and fishing but cannot understand what the church teaches about contraception. Why can I tell you all about mechanics but can’t hold a conversation about the teachings of Christ. Why can I quote movies but have no comprehension of the Bible?  Why am I fluent in stock market lingo but cant hold a conversation about the church’s teaching on Marian dogma?” St. Jerome said, “Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.” I would also submit that ignorance of Church teaching is also ignorance of Christ. Because the Church is the Body of Christ, therefore when the church speaks, it’s with Christ’s voice. For 33 days, spend twenty minutes daily learning about your faith. You can’t give to others what you don’t already possess yourself. Also find out more about porn addiction. How can you BEAT IT, if you don’t know ABOUT IT?

Some ideas: Here at P.O.R.N. Militia we recommend  reading the New Testament and the writings of the saints.

Mortification (Exercise)

To labor is to pray. -Motto of the Benedictines

Say to your body: “I would rather keep you in slavery than be myself your slave.”-Josemaria Escriva

You may be thinking, “How does doing exercise have anything to do with my spiritual life?” It has everything to do with your spiritual life- well at least half! We are not purely spiritual beings, we are not angles. We are creatures that are made up of soul and body. Part of spiritual discipline is physical discipline. Research shows that people who exercise have a better chance of beating addiction. St. Paul refers to the spiritual life in terms of physical exercise, “Do you not know that in a race all the runners compete, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. Well, I do not run aimlessly, I do not box as one beating the air; but I pommel my body and subdue it, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified” 1 Corinthians 9:24-27.  As with your prayer life, only you know where you are physically. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t exercised in years or if you run 5 miles a day. Do something extra. Add something new. Pick some form of exercise and stick with it- twenty minutes a day for 33 days.

Acts of Charity

Anything done for another is done for oneself.-Pope John Paul II

Being charitable doesn’t mean giving away old clothes or copper pennies…let us- you and I - give ourselves unstintingly. And we’ll keep those who come in contact with us from going through the same sad experience.

Charity is the truest form of love. In the Greek it’s known as: agape or the love of God or Christ for mankind. Charity is to do something for someone and not expect anything in return- to love other people just because they are creatures of God. Jesus said that we should love our neighbors as if they were ourselves. Acts of Charity involve giving of our time, talent, and treasure. Acts of charity are not about BIG acts. It could be simply things in out lives. Or as Mother Teresa said, “To show great love for God and our neighbor we need not do great things. It is how much we put in the doing, that makes our offering something and beautiful to God.” For 33 days look for small opportunities to make other peoples lives better- one small action at a time- record what you did. C.S. Lewis said this about charity:

“I do not believe one can settle how much we ought to give. I am afraid the only safe rule is to give more than we can spare. In other words, if our expenditure  on comforts, luxuries, amusements,  etc,  is  up to  the standard common among those with the same income as our own, we are probably giving away too little. If our charities do not at all pinch or hamper us, I should say they are too small There ought to be things we should like to do and  cannot  do  because  our charitable  expenditure  excludes them.  I am speaking now of "charities" in the common way. Particular cases of distress among your own relatives, friends, neighbors or employees, which God, as it were, forces upon your notice, may demand much more: even to the crippling and endangering of your own position.”

For 33 days focus on Prayer, Fasting, Study, Exercise and Acts of Charity! For this Boot camp to be successful, you will have to do ALL five in some way for ALL 33 Days. That you should put away the old self of your former way of life, corrupted through deceitful desires, and be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and put on the new self, created in God's way in righteousness and holiness of truth” Ephesians 4:22-24. Take 33 days and commit. Commit to God, others, and yourself. Pick things that will be a struggle for you. But do not set goals for your spiritual journey that are unrealistic and unattainable. Don’t set yourself up for failure. But don’t be upset when you fail. If you mess up or miss a day, do not be discouraged--start back immediately! In closing, I think C.S. Lewis says it best:

“We may, indeed, be sure that perfect chastity-like perfect charity-will not be attained by any merely human efforts. You must ask for God’s help. Even when you have done so, it may seem to you for a long time that no help, or less help than you need, is being given. Never mind. After each failure, ask forgiveness, pick yourself up, and try again. Very often what God first helps us towards is not the virtue itself but just this power of always trying again. For however important chastity or courage, or truthfulness, or any other virtue may be, this process trains us in habits of the soul which are more important still.  It cures our illusions about ourselves and teaches us to depend on God. We learn, on the one hand, that we cannot trust ourselves even in our best moments and, on the other that we need not despair even in our worst, for our failures are forgiven. The only fatal thing is to sit down content with anything less than perfection.”

At the end of this 33 day process we will be ready to consecrate ourselves to the Mother of Purity. I‘ll be posting more about the consecration in days to come. “Love our Lady. And she will obtain abundant grace to help you conquer in your daily struggle. And the enemy will gain nothing by those perversities that seem to boil up continually within you, trying to engulf in their fragrant corruption the high ideals, those sublime commands that Christ himself has placed in your heart. Serviam!- “I will serve!”- St. Josemaria Escriva

I will be posting daily prayers, reflections and scriptures as we embark on our journey to consecrate ourselves to Mary- Good Luck soldiers, THIS IS WAR.
